Obedience to God is productive!!!
Many people hear ‘obedience’ and tend to recoil against it. We naturally want to be our own bosses – that is the core of sinfulness and the epicenter of many people’s issues.
We see this in children, especially in toddler and teenage years. We hear it: ‘mine,’ ‘no,’ ‘you’re not the boss of me!’ etc. We see it: refusals, defiance, and tantrums used to avoid compliance. Children need parents, guardians, coaches, and mentors to teach them the value of obedience to trustworthy leaders. Ultimately Christians must see this instruction in obedience in a bigger perspective. The ability to obey parents and teachers, authorities and bosses has value in itself, BUT… the point of discipling our children toward obedience is to help them prepare to obey our God!
As any person comes to understand and walk in obedience to God can expect to receive God-promised results as well.
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.” Proverbs 3:1-2
As Solomon taught here, obedience to God’s ways ‘prolongs life.’ It’s easy to see ho one who is accurately representing God and enjoying healthy fellowship with God might have their life upgraded in both quality and quantity. While God’s plans may be a short, yet meaningful life for some, this Proverb points to a longer life for those who learn to obey God. This prolonged life could very well be the result OF obedience, as so many of God’s commandments are for our safety and healthy relationships!
A second benefit of an obedient child of God is that it brings peace and prosperity to their life. Anyone who is choosing to align their lives, words, and actions with the divine will of God would rightly expect God would bless them for such decisions. This does not promise that all of life will be roses and petunias! But God will increase the quality of life for all believers DESPITE their circumstances if not through their life situations.
So… teach children obedience. With that skill they can enjoy strengthened relationships with family and friends and with that skill they can enjoy sweet fellowship with their Creator and may receive and enjoy the blessings of prolonged life and God’s prosperity.
